Migrating to Isilon

Isilon is a high-performance Network-Attach storage solution that provides massive scalability to over 20 Petabytes in a single file system, without compromising performance as total data volume scales up.

Isilon storage systems are architected using a variety of “server nodes” each containing high-performance CPU, up to 96GB RAM, and scalability to 144TB per node by utilizing SAS, SATA, and SSD Drives that are optimized either for performance, capacity, or a combination of both, depending on the type of data to be stored and the access requirements of the applications.

Why replace Centera with Isilon?

Isilon presents itself as a file system on the network and does not require a proprietary API to communicate with the storage cluster, as is the case with Centera, thereby greatly simplifying integration with data archiving applications that write data to standard network shares.

Additionally, future data migration efforts can be performed by in-house IT staff, and will no longer require the services of data migration specialists to circumvent “vendor lock-in” situations as seen with Centera migration efforts.

Maintaining WORM Attributes

SmartLock Software provides Write Once Read Many (WORM) functionality to files stored on an Isilon cluster, thereby protecting against accidental or malicious modifications or deletions of data, and satisfying regulatory compliance laws such as SEC 17a-4, Sarbanes-Oxley, and HIPAA, where data must be written to a non-alterable, non-erasable storage device.

During our Centera-to-Isilon migration process, we have the ability to extract retention rules and litigation hold attributes of objects written to Centera, and apply those attributes to the file once migrated to Isilon; thereby preserving the remaining retention period of each file migrated.

For organizations that require highly-scalable Network-attached storage, with only a subset of data being subject to compliance and WORM properties, SmartLock retention attributes can be set down to the directory level, and the device can be shared across other applications with no effect on performance or availability.
