The spotlight is on StorFirst Altus, a backup and recovery application purpose-built to add a layer of protection to data stored on EMC Centera storage systems.

Contrary to archiving data onto optical media, where records are written to an archival medium that is "physically permanent", EMC Centera utilizes SATA hard drives as its storage medium, with WORM functionality being controlled by the Centera operating system, and is therefore subject to the same drive failures, data corruption, and accidental or intentional record deletions that are inherent to any other disk-based storage system.

Designed specifically for the backup and recovery of EMC Centera, Altus performs C-Clip and object-level replication from Centera to LTO tape drives, LTO tape libraries and Virtual Tape Libraries (VTL), providing the ability to recover Centera content back to a "point in time", while still maintaining data authenticity for corporate governance and regulatory compliance.

Altus includes an intuitive Windows GUI with job wizards to easily perform "on demand" or scheduled backups, restore jobs based on individual C-Clip, date range, or entire Centera, the ability to backup multiple Centera devices to a single tape library, does NOT require additional backup applications such as Networker, NetBackup, and Tivoli Storage Manager, and supports tape library sharing with other Enterprise backup applications, thereby reducing overall deployment costs.
