EMC Disk Xtender

EMC DiskXtender is highly scalable data management/data migration solution that reclaims production storage capacity, speeds backup and recovery processes, and helps to meet data retention requirements by migrating inactive or infrequently accessed files to an appropriate secondary storage resource, according to user-defined policies.

DiskXtender automatically and transparently moves data between storage tiers based on policies such as creation date, modification date, and access date, as well as file size, file type, or file ownership, without requiring modification to an application or workstation path or UNC setting.

Once files are migrated to an archival storage device, they can be retrieved directly from the file system or through an application call, and will automatically be migrated back to the original storage tier. By using the direct-read capability, files may be read directly from the archive tier, without being migrated back to primary disk during the read request.

Disk Xtender for NAS is a version of Disk Xtender that seamlessly integrates with EMC Celerra and Network Appliance (NetApp) platforms, delivering the same level of file migration, capacity management, and retention policy management offered by Disk Xtender for Windows and Disk Xtender for UNIX.

EMC DiskXtender provides a best practice file-archiving solution that reduces storage costs, simplifies capacity management, and ensures adherence to data retention policies.

Summary of EMC Disk Xtender

  • Provides policy-based file migration in Windows and UNIX environments, as well as NAS environments using EMC Celerra and NetApp Filers
  • Migrates inactive or infrequently accessed files to an archive tier of storage based on policies including file attributes, file size, or file ownership
  • Speeds backup and recovery processes by replacing data files with “stub files” that are significantly smaller in file size than the original file
  • Helps organizations meet retention requirements and regulatory compliance by migrating files to write-once archival storage devices such as EMC Centera and optical libraries
  • Supports a wide range of archival storage devices including EMC Centera, tape drives and libraries, and optical libraries
